Part 1a
Analysis of routine
hospital data
Quantitative analysis of routine hospital data from three NHS trusts will be undertaken. A rapid scoping review of predictors of reliable blood culture sampling will also be conducted. The aim is to identify factors associated with reliable, high quality, blood sampling for patients prescribed broad-spectrum antibiotics within 24 hours of admission.
Data will be extracted from hospital electronic health records and electronic microbiology records among the three hospitals. Inclusion criteria include adults (>18 years) receiving intravenous broad-spectrum antibiotics within 24 hours of admission. Data will be analysed using logistic regression.
Outputs:
Description of situational factors influencing blood culture sampling, to inform co-design part 2;
Publication on influence of situational factors on blood sampling practices.
