Diagram: Extending and improving the blood culture pathway journey through intervention bundle

This diagram  illustrates the blood culture pathway journey, and where each intervention prototype is positioned along the blood culture pathway. Interventions are numbered according to the challenge they are designed to address.

The current blood culture pathway in the emergency department (ED) is often limited to sample collection, lab delivery, and the initiation of IV treatment. Typically, ED staff are not involved in the subsequent follow-up. Our research suggests extending this pathway to include a deeper understanding of the value and a collaborative feedback loop with the lab; sharing this data will support better decision-making and improve overall performance.

The toolkit has been designed to strengthen practices and connections along the pathway, including building in feedback loops so ED staff can understand the whole pathway and see the impact of their practice.
